Happiness Visualized

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

It has been awhile since I have had time to post a Happiness Visualized, which only means even more updates to share! This week I am loving all the sweet moments this past month and a few pretty things acquired along the way. What has been inspiring you lately?

The above picture is a re-edit of my 8Balloons photo by my fellow Bostonian/friend/rapper Grover, and I couldn’t be happier! He is turning into quite the photographer and editor amongst his other talents.

Who says you can’t celebrate your best friend’s birthday if they aren’t in the same state? I went out with a friend and they ordered me a huge cotton candy/gummi bear contraption with raspberry cake so we could at least take a picture and text my best friend on his special day :)

My friend Merryl saw this idea online and decided to make a few funny cards for both her and I.

My dear friend Amanda and her fiancé Brian had such a beautiful engagement party earlier this month. At the end of the night, they gave out these awesome Save the Dates. Each slide shows a picture of the couple with information about the wedding date and location. What a brilliant idea!

Every morning my friends/baristas always leave a special note on my cup. It’s a great way to start the day!

Featured Artist: Kendra Kantor Part II

Last week’s Featured Artist (post here) was Kendra Kantor of Like A Bird and Loose Leaf Dreams. Her Q&A was so in depth and touched upon so many of Kendra’s pursuits and passions that I had made it into two parts. Of course this is fine by me because I get to step back and look at her work for a  little while longer:)

Who are some of your favorite artists and sites?

I have to be honest, this is one of the hardest questions for me to answer. I love so many artists and photographers. One of my favorite things to do when I was at art school and whenever I go to a bookstore is to look through the photography books and magazines. But I’ll try to list a few.

I love Ralph Eugene Meatyard  Nick Brandt, Jean Shin. Those were the first 3 names that came to me.

If you’re looking for more contemporary artists, check out the Art21 website, Art Journaling magazine by Somerset, B&W Magazine or Juxtapoz Magazine.

You can also check out and follow my Beautiful Art and Photography boards on Pinterest or the art inspirations&features category on my blog to see more artists I like. I update all three places fairly regularly with lovely work.

How did you get into photography?

©Kendra J Kantor All Rights Reserved

This is the same answer as why I chose paper as my medium. It chose me.
I don’t know how my love for the photographic medium started exactly. I was in 7th grade, and had gotten photoshop as a present I think. Later in the year, I begged my parents to buy me a small point and shoot camera….I took pictures of everything and anything. I read all the blogs and articles I could find online, I immersed myself in it. It slowly grew from there. I’m mainly self taught (as in, I learned how to use a camera, and all the technical aspects of the art by myself) but I did take 2 classes in college and spent 1 year at art school, majoring in photography.

Tell me about your passion for road trips and adventures?

I don’t even know how to explain it. I’ve been working on a new blog with my fiance, Loose Leaf Dreams, about travel and in doing so I’ve been researching and following popular travel blogs. And every time I read about someone in another country, the adventures and places they are seeing…my heart just yearns to go out and do it. I want to see beautiful things, experience different cultures. I think the first time I’m on a different continent or in a different country…I’ll have to just sit for a minute in amazement at how far from home I really am.

Any small ideas you can include to help others create something small and from the heart to start out with?

©Kendra J Kantor All Rights Reserved

Relax. Don’t force it. Go to the space that makes you the most comfortable. For me, it’s surrounded by my supplies, with coffee and music playing. Listen to something soothing, soul touching or soak in the silence. If you’re really struggling with writing down your own thoughts, pick a quote, song lyrics or a poem to start with. Copy it down in your journal or art journal and then just keep writing…keep your hand moving, your thoughts flowing.

What’s your favorite coffee?
Anything.
I’m pretty open nowadays. When I first started drinking coffee, I swore I would never drink black coffee and only liked mochas. Now, I don’t even put sugar in my coffee at home. I really love a mocha from Starbucks or Panera as a treat though. And I have been hankering to try some more exotic blends, I usually just buy a cheap french vanilla ground coffee.

You are still so young, how have you found out how to be true to yourself, which you seem to do well :)

©Kendra J Kantor All Rights Reserved

Hard question. I’ve always been very observant and aware of myself and others. I’ve always noticed in people things that annoy me, or that impress me and I have always been aware of how I feel and where my feelings come from. Like I said before, I really like to think so I’m always trying to think through what I want to do with my life, what my vision is for the future and how to accomplish those things. I  feel like I don’t 100% know myself and taking time off from college was a big part of figuring that out but even without knowing all about myself or how I tick, I think it’s important not to do anything that just feels wrong. If you start a piece of artwork or writing and you dread going back to work on it, or if you start something and can’t finish it…first take some time and think about it and you may just decide that it’s because it’s not right for you. If someone comes up to you and offers you a collaboration, but it just doesn’t mesh with you or your work…don’t agree to it. Life your life how you want to, create work you enjoy and cherish.

Book recommendations:
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg
Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury
Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

Most of these books are technically creative writing reference books, but as a visual artist and as a writer…I find them all extremely helpful. They teach you how to think about your work, ways to push through creative blocks. These are books that I go back to, again and again…and again. And I always will.

365 Series: Week 4 of the Creative Journey

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Congrats to Merryl for reaching week 4 of her creative journey! They just keep on getting better :) I can’t wait to see next week’s creatives…

Day 22: Create a bridge. Thanks to Alisia and the inventory closet.  Rough terrain for those sour patch kids!

Day 22

Day 23: Waste not! Use materials from the recycling bin today! I made a journal using the book backs from Day 8, bottle labels, and pop cans.

Day 23

Day 24: It’s not easy being green. Use green materials and maybe even create with a green background! These are friendship bracelets with letter charms for my 365 friends on Instagram! :)

Day 24

Day 25: Work with nature. Walk outside in the yard or a park and find your materials. “The weather is here, wish you were beautiful.”

Day 25

Day 26: Make something portable that usually isn’t. I don’t live in the same town as my family, and I think the idea of them being “portable” (even the ones not pictured) at any moment would be quite a blessing. So instead I put them in my mini wallet, and heart of course! Home is where the heart is!

Day 26

Day 27: Use an event dream as an inspiration. I often times, can not remember my dreams. So instead, I used this photo I took recently at the beach one night. It was so dark and so beautiful out, it almost felt like a dream. There is a quote I LOVE by Neil Gaiman that speaks perfectly on this photo, the way I feel about this project, and life in general. I wish you all good madness, and make art!

Day 27

Day 28: Use traditional school supplies like a number 2 pencil and lined notebook paper to make something not  so traditional. A couple of paper chimes!

Day 28

Week 2: Make Something Everyday and Change Your Life

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Last week was the beginning of Merryl’s creative journey with the book, 365: A Daily Creativity Journal: Make Something Every Day and Change Your Life!
. Below are the second week prompts with her creations! I just love seeing how she is improving. Last week she felt a bit outside her comfort zone, so her creations seemed to be pushed a little. This week you could start seeing Merryl releasing her inner artist! It really is all about pushing yourself at first and then watching the magic happen innately.

Day 8: Transform an old book into something new. Book vase!

Day 9

Day 9: Make something with your breakfast before you eat it. Clementines, “A sunrise has no stage fright.”

Day 9

Day 10: Use water as your medium today. Mr. and Mrs. Salt and Pepper walk the plank!

Day 10

Day 11: Work with the other hand, your non-dominant hand. Writing with my left hand looks like a 6 year olds, so I chose a great Shel Silverstein poem Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas and made a fridge ornament (in honor of the elementary theme and all :) )

Day 11

Day 12: Camouflage. White picket polka dot dream <3

Day 12

Day 13: Use tea bags/leaves/liquid to create something today. White fabric and newspaper soaked in tea water for a dye job.

Day 13

Day 14: Make something microscopic. I used the stippling technique and it created really small dots. Chanel inspired. Les Femmes de Paris!

Day 14

Sneak Peak into Week 3! I love her creation for Day 15!

Day 15: Use a dollar bill as your inspiration today. New readers and a bookmark for 6 bucks, beat that big chain bookstores :)

Day 15

Happy and Creative Monday!

Monday, January 17th, 2011

As I was discussing last week, my best friend Merryl decided to put creativity back in her life daily with Noah Scalin’s, “365: A Daily Creativity Journal: Make Something Everyday and Change Your Life!”. Each Monday I will be posting Merryl’s weekly journal of her creations. Here is the first week of her journey in her own words…

Every first day of the New Year, I find myself sifting through my mental notes of all the ideas or projects I wanted to accomplish from the previous year.  At the end of 2010 I felt those echoes louder than ever.  The little things I enjoyed doing, such as crafting, became completely isolated. You know, “life happens” and “there aren’t enough hours in the day” syndrome. Then I fell upon a fun, creative iPhone app (Instagram) and a girl’s photo about a book, and her idea for the New Year.

The book Julie mentioned earlier, 365: A Daily Creative Journal- Make Something Everyday and Change Your Life spoke to me. My inner crafter started dancing with motivation and two hours later I was at the book store. I felt like the stars aligned and this was exactly what I needed.  The idea is to make an original creation everyday, and in return feel the sense of accomplishment.  No stress, no restrictions, and no pressure for the next Mona Lisa. A simple and inventive prompt for each day of the year and you step into adult recess; a tiny break from your hectic day to have fun and be creative! Ironically, on the first day of 2011, what I was yearning for so long, fell right into my lap!

Julie invited me to post some of my daily creatives here on her blog. I’m exited to see where this new creative adventure leads! Here are Days 1-7!

Day 1: Make something that fits into the palms of your hands using materials only in your immediate enviorment. Velcro and a button in the shape of a heart. (from my flip-flop) All you need is love!

Day 1

Day 2: what is your favorite animal? Use that as your inspiration today. A basset hound named Tank. Paper weaving of a pop art pup, I like to call it “basset weaving!”

Day 2

Day 3: make something out of paper but don’t use scissors, glue, or draw on it. Monogram post it’s paper sun 365.

Day 3

Day: 4 Take a five minute walk and where you end up, use whatever materials available. Then, leave it there for someone else to discover. “amour, period” This was in a local park.

Day 4

Day 5: What do you collect? I felt my home grown roots and chose a selected group of UI garb! Each save a great memory and remind me of a place I really, love.

Day 5

Day 6: look in the kitchen and use the first fruit/ veg you see. “The Berry Bunch”

Day 6

Day 7: Make a stencil. A favorite classic in rotation lately, Auntie Mame. She’s fabulous and inspiring.

I also gifted a bottle of wine and used it for the bag. “Life’s a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!”

Day 7

Day 7 extended

Lomography

Lomo without the O

We all know the one person at the party who is obsessively capturing shots even if they are the most mundane of shots. They don’t let you drink until they take the picture of the toast. They don’t let you laugh, until you take the picture capturing it. Basically they don’t stay in the moment because they are too involved capturing and possibly putting it on Facebook :) .
Then there is the opposite of kind. The kind of person who forgets their camera or always wishes they captured that perfect moment. This describes me; I can sometimes become too self conscious to ask to take the pictures because I don’t want to be labeled as the first kind.
I have always had a love for photography, although I am not great by any means. I remember taking classes in high school and getting somewhat good, but then quitting. However, that hasn’t stopped me from appreciating others work. Since I am color blind and no good at reading apertures or white balancing, I like to rely on the camera ultimately. Therefore, I love lomography. Lomography makes any picture look great, even the most accidental and candid shots. For some reason those tend to look the best. There are many types of lomo cameras all with different abilities. It makes the person who is the least artsy look creative! Lomo cameras are great for parties and also for just capturing some fun moments with your friend. I highly suggest having one at your disposal.

On the topic of photography, I also love the iphone app, Instagram. It takes your average pictures and allows you in many different settings to manipulate them to look vintage, bright, and just plain awesome. Instagram then allows you to upload these to your feed and lets whoever else is following you to view and like your post. It is basically twitter in photography form. I like the idea of a photo telling the story.
